Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is a protocol developed by Netscape in 1996 which quickly became the method of choice for securing data transmissions across the Internet. SSL is an integral part of most web browsers and web servers and makes use of the public-and-private key encryption system developed by Rivest, Shamir, and Adleman.
In order to make an SSL connection, the SSL protocol requires the server to have a digital certificate installed. A digital certificate is an electronic file that uniquely identifies individuals and servers. Digital certificates serve as a kind of digital passport or credential which authenticates the server prior to the SSL session being established.
Many internet users now recognise the padlock in their browser and look for this prior to filling in personal details on a website. If there's no padlock, chances are you're losing sales. When you install an SSL certificate and activate it on your website, your users will see the padlock and feel reassured that it is safer to enter their details.
There are hundreds of SSL certificates to choose from, but we offer four types of SSLs. Most users should be fine with the RapidSSL certificate--this is by far our least expensive SSL certificate, and it comes with a static banner you can use to reassure your visitors that their connection to you is secure.
The QuickSSL Premium is significantly more expensive, but it comes with a banner specifically for your website with a timestamp written. This banner and timestamp are not imperative; however, if you'd like a dynamic banner, then the QuickSSL Premium is a good choice. Ultimately, we don't think choosing a QuickSSL Premium over a RapidSSL will have much of an impact on your sales.
The TrueBusiness ID with EV certificate gives the users the 'Green Bar' experience. This SSL certificate makes the user's address bar green (depending on their browser), and it also requires you to send ID and company documentation to GeoTrust before they'll issue the certificate. Ultimately, we don't know if the 'Green Bar' experience has much of an impact on a site's sales, but the TrueBusiness ID with EV SSL has been rather popular with website owners lately.
The WildCard SSL is for securing multiple subdomains, such as www.mydomain.com sub.mydomain.com, anything.mydomain.com, etc.
